When I started writing this book, at the end of 2019, we were still living in a scenario without a pandemic. My mu- sings about the future, with all possible degrees of unpredictability and uncertainty, had a healthy dose of optimism. No one worked with the hypothesis of an imminent threat, fast and on a planetary scale.
The reality is like this: it does not usually follow the same standards of precision as the exact or natural sciences. Since Aristotle, we have known that it has the function of realigning our concepts and theories – and not the other way around. Especially when it comes to the future, something that hasn't happened yet, that's where the chances of being surprised are exponentially greater.
